It's official - 'The Dying Piano' is going to Cannes!
What started out as an international collaboration created by Penang-based artist, Madeleine Ekeblad has morphed into a bigger project. Hong Kong based production company, 72 Dragons, has extended the concept for the short film corner of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The original version was developed with the assistance of up-and-coming award-winning cinematographer, Emily Tathem, along with original music which I composed specifically for the project. Maddi has announced the project, so I can now share it with you here. The expanded score is still in production, to reflect the new - deeply moving - storyline. I'll keep you posted about the official launch.
“The musical composition for the work chronicles the piano’s process of dying, as it shifts from moments of harmonic serenity to discord and despair. At times, the reach to resurrection seems possible, until death appears inevitable. The end arrives, with increasing dissonance, stilted and gasping, until the final solitary note.”
(Composer's Statement from original short version)
